Artificial Intelligence: What is it?

Artificial intelligence (A.I) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems (TechTarget, 2017).

Artificial intelligence is something exhibited by machines. In computer science, an “intelligent” machine is a logical program that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of success at some goal (Artificial Intelligence, 2017).

Examples of Artificial Intelligence programs

A.I programs are used in everyday life, and you probably don’t even realize it. Here are a few examples:

  • Virtual Personal Assistants e.g Siri or Cortana
  • Video games and mobile apps
  • Online Customer Support
  • Netflix
  • Pandora Internet Radio
  • Smart Cars
  • Facial recognition Scanners

How does A.I affect us?

AI is generally misunderstood, seen as something intelligent, but evil. It’s nothing more than man made machines, that learn faster using examples.

AI effects us everyday, because we interact with it on a regular basis. From the apps we use on our smartphones to the self-serve checkouts we go through at the supermarket.

It is used to enhance our GPS’s, the AI directs to your destination or the ability to call on Siri, to ask where the closet fast food restaurant is, or to have a chat if you are feeling lonely.

Unemployment for some is a real possibly, with the introduction of automatic equipment, that doesn’t require human intervention. A common example of this are self-serve checkouts. Because the AI has taken over as self-serve, the human operator is no longer required.

How will it effect your future?

Artificial Intelligence will become a common place in our lives as they become more advanced. This comes with many positives. Some include:

  • House cleaning robots (e.g roomba)
  • Safer work places, as the machines will do the dangerous jobs
  • Advanced transportation services ( e.g self driving cars)
  • Robotic doctors
  • Space exploration

What do you think?

Now I hope you have a rough idea of what artificial intelligence is and how it may effect you.

How will your life be effected? Leave a comment in the section below and see how differently this may be already be changing our lives!

I agree that A.I is around more than we realise today. There is the whole scare that the world will turn into a Terminator movie and A.I will eventually take over. This partly true, in the areas you mentioned above. However, do you believe it could result in a huge loss of jobs due to A.I taking over not only the more complicated jobs, but the more simple ones as well? Such as having a robot as a maid? Like in The Jetsons. To having a robot vehicle to drive you to your chosen destination. Eliminating the human error factor.

      Hi Matt,
Thanks for commenting. Personally I do think that the more complicated and simple ones will be taken over by robots. I think it would be the big chain stores, like fast food restaurants or supermarkets. We will have to wait and see!
