How Does Artificial Intelligence work?
One way a A.I works is by machine learning. This works to predict the future from the past (usually). You have some data, you apply a machine learning algorithm and it learns what the solution is based on the variables. Then when new data comes in it is able to run those through the model it built to give you a result.
For example: Spam filtering
All the mail that you have marked as spam in the past, a machine learning algorithm builds a model that says ” if this has this word or this or that, in the email” there is a certain percentage that this email is spam. Then when you get an email saying “buy this and offer of a life time” it automatically gets classified as spam.
Benefits of artificial Intelligence:
The general benefit of AI is that it replicates decisions and actions of humans without human shortcomings, such as fatigue, emotion and limited time. Some include:
- Error reduction
- Geological & space exploration
- Repetitive jobs
- Dangerous jobs
- Medicine (robotic surgery)
- Digital assistants
- No breaks
Disadvantages of artificial Intelligence:
The major disadvantage is, they don’t morally know what’s right or wrong. They can’t feel emotions like humans. Others include:
- High cost (instillation, repair)
- Lack of emotions
- Breakdown (loss of information, time consuming)
- Don’t improve with experience
- Can become to efficient in its goal
- Unemployment
- Lack common sense
Should you be concerned?
With the advancements in technology, it is only a matter of time until artificial intelligence plays a larger role in all of our lives.
A.I has several pros, but it has it’s disadvantages as well. It’s benefits and risks should be carefully weighed before employing it for human convenience. In pursuit to become god, man risks destroying himself.
